Larry Norman Nielsen, 71, of Viborg, passed away at home on March 16, 2017 after a yearlong battle with cancer.
Larry was born on September 10, 1945 in Sioux Falls to Norman ‘Doc’ Nielsen and Josephine (Olesen) Nielsen. He grew up and attended school in the Centerville/Viborg area graduating from Viborg High School in 1963.
Larry was a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard from 1964-1974. During this time he attended Officers Candidate School. He graduated in 1970 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
He married Gail Nelson on November 25, 1967. To this union 3 children were born; Christoffer, Carrie, and Bret.
Larry held various jobs, but worked many years with his father in house and apartment construction. In 1982, he purchased his crop insurance agency where he thoroughly enjoyed his customers.
Over the years he enjoyed snowmobiling, golf, fishing and goose hunting trips with his dad, brother, and sons. He also enjoyed being a Mason and a Shriner. He loved attending the events of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Gail; two sons, Christoffer (Tracy) and Bret; one daughter, Carrie (Mark) Ernster; 4 grandchildren, Camdyn, Kinsley, and Carson Ernster and Levi Nielsen; his sister, Peggy (Bret) Freemole; sister-in-law, Janelle Nielsen and brother-in-law, Gary (Connie) Nelson and his nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim.
