Merlin J. Tipton, 87, of Vermillion, SD passed away Wednesday, August 2 at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Merlin was born March 23, 1930 in Pierre, SD to Joseph and Teresa Tipton. Merlin attended school in Pierre and received his Master’s in Hydrogeology from the University of South Dakota. He served his country as a medic in the Korean War from 1951-54. He married Mary JoEllen Pillar on August 25, 1954 in Vermillion. He retired after 35 years as the District Director for the SD Geological Survey.
Merlin enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, an occasional game of pool, and golfing and “boy could he putt”. He was also a long-time Coyote fan and supporter of basketball and football and attended many events over the years. He also volunteered his time at Coyote track meets.
He was preceded in death by his wife JoEllen and a sister Sharon.
He is survived by his sons Mark (Lynette) Tipton of Vermillion and John Tipton of Sioux Falls, SD, a daughter Mary (Calvin) Hanson of Meckling, SD, three grandchildren; Doug (Mandy) Hanson, Dave (Jenny) Hanson and Mike (Jenny) Hanson and five great grandchildren; Kasey, Alexis, Karter, Madelyn and Charlotte and also his canine companion Happy.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 5 at the Bergen Lutheran Church rural Meckling, SD with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center/Mayo Clinic.
