Shirley Nelson (Carlson)
Shirley I. Nelson, 95, of Viborg, formerly of Wakonda, SD passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD.
Shirley Isobel Carlson was born September 23, 1921 in Hartford, SD to Hardy and Aves (Lineback) Carlson. She attended Volin grade and high school, graduating in 1939. She went to Southern State Normal School in Springfield, SD and in 1940 received her teaching credentials. Shirley taught all 8 grades of country school for 3 years, earning $60 per month the first year and $75 per month the last 2 years.
She married Darrell Nelson on June 1, 1943. Darrell was in the service at the time and they traveled to various duty stations, finally settling in Los Angeles, CA after Darrell’s military commitment. In 1949, they moved back to Wakonda, SD to farm until retirement.
Shirley was a member of First United Methodist Church of Yankton, the Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Wakonda & Yankton Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two sons; son Bob (Virginia) of Brandon, SD and their Children - Chris, Tony, Jeremy and Andy; son Jim (Peg) of Wakonda and their two daughters – Courtney Nelson Lindstrom (Richie) and Alexandra; and two great-grandchildren – Aneka Nelson (Jeremy) and Lucien Nelson (Tony). She is also survived by sister-in-law Donna Schaefer (John) of Yankton and brother-in-law Don Nelson of Virginia and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Darrell; her parents and sister, Mary Jeanne.
