Obituary for June Sherman (Miille)
June Sherman, 97, of Vermillion, SD, passed away Friday, October 13 at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 17 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Wakonda, SD. HansenFuneralHome.com.
June was born October 5th, 1920 in rural Ponca, Nebraska, the eighth child of Albert and Agnes (Becker) Miille. She grew up on a farm near Newcastle, then moved to Ponca, and at the age of 5 moved back to farm where she attended Sunny Side country school, which was a 2 room country school. She completed 10th grade then went to high school in Newcastle and graduated in 1937. She married Lyle Guy Sherman March 26, 1941 and they lived mostly at Daily township, then 2 years outside of Ponca, but moved back to Daily. In 1960 the family moved to Meckling, South Dakota, living on a farm by the bluff road. They purchased a farm in 1966 outside of Wakonda, where the 3 younger children grew up. To this union were 6 girls, one boy Steven, who passed away at the age of 5. Lyle died in 1988 and June stayed on the farm, and took her first job outside the home at Meckling Fertilizer and later at the Wakonda library. In 2003 she moved into Oakleaf apartments in Vermillion and enjoyed helping in the kitchen serving the noon meal. She worked a few years for the W H Over Museum at the information desk. She loved to travel and spend time with her family, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran church in Vermillion.
June is lovingly remembered by her 5 daughters: Saundra (Calvin) Rahn, Ponca Ne, Elaine (Skip) Johnson, Vermillion SD, Janice (Don) Lyso, Wakonda SD, Verlene Olson, Irene SD, Verna (Dick) Orr., Wakonda SD, and sister-in-law Pauline Miille and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Lyle, a son Steven, a daughter Wanda (Tim) Hannahs, and brothers Walter, Gilbert, Nels, Arnold and Melvin, and sisters Ruby Metzger, Wenona Janssen and Nora Miille and a son-in-law Richard Olson. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter Carrie Orr and a great grandson Samuel Freng.
June has requested no flowers at her service and asked that donation go to the WH Over Museum.
