Marlies R. Johnson, 81, of Viborg, SD, passed away Monday, January 15, 2018 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg.
Marlies Rosa Busse was born December 14, 1936 in Germany to Otto and Rosa (Jaenisch) Busse. Her parents died before she was 10yrs old. She grew up with her aunt and grandmother in Magdeburg, Germany, where she attended school until the 8th grade. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Germany.
She married Wolfgang Mohr and the couple had two sons. At the age of 19, she and Wolfgang traveled to a West German camp seeking work. Their two sons, Siegfried, 2, and Detlef, only a few months old, stayed with an aunt in East Germany. But after the Berlin Wall was built, she lost contact with her two boys and her two sisters. Marlies later divorced and remarried to Wally Johnson, who was stationed with the U.S. Army in Fort Riley, Kan. She and Wally moved to Irene in 1982. Wally passed away in December of 1997. Marlies continued searching for her family, and after many years she finally made contact with her eldest son. She was eventually reacquainted with the rest of her family.
Marlies worked at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Irene for many years. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene. Marlies loved to visit with friends and enjoyed playing bingo. She had a bright personality and a wonderful sense of humor.
Marlies is survived by two sons, Siegfried Muller and Detlef Mohr, two sisters Annerose Grasshoff and Doris Ratunde all of Germany, also many close friends.
