Darlene "Darla" (Uken) Zurcher
Darlene Ann (Uken) Zurcher, age 72, of Irene, SD passed away peacefully while on hospice care at her home on March 1st, 2018. She valiantly fought ovarian cancer for 3 ½ years.
Darlene (Darla) was born December 9, 1945 to Joseph and Anna (Zemina) Plihal on the family farm. She grew up in Bon Homme County and graduated from Tyndall High School. Darla worked at the South Dakota Human Service Center in Yankton for 23 years in custodial services as a custodial crew leader and had just retired in August of last year. She loved her co-workers and spoke highly of all of them.
Darla was happy and outgoing. Her vibrant personality was best reflected in the flashy clothes and bright colors she wore, mauve and purple being her favorite. She enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting activities and loved traveling by camper to the Black Hills to visit friends. She also enjoyed bowling, watching basketball on television, and selling Avon products in her spare time. After work or on her days off, she could be found walking around Memorial Park in Yankton or meeting up with friends for coffee.
Grateful for having shared her life are: four children, Nick (Jerri) Smith Yankton, S.D, Crystal (Wayne) Uken Sherwood of Oakland, Ca., Carla (Jeff) Steppat of Yankton, S.D., and Angie (Brett) Sander of Omaha, Neb.; eight grandchildren, Charity (Darrin) Hento, Steven and Nicholas Arneson, Curtis, Collin, and Jace Steppat, and Alex and Avery Sander; several great grandchildren; partner of 26 years Myron Zurcher and his children Philip Hackworth, Glenn, Jake, Sydney, and Jeremy Zurcher; Aunt Phyllis Zemina; and cousins including Carol (Bob) Larsen, Frank Jr., Nadine, Lorna, and Julie Zemina, Maxine, Alvin, Darrell, Shirley, and Gloria Porter, and Marlene and Eugene Johnston.
