Mary Malone (Lang)
Mary Ruth Lang Malone, 81, of Vermillion, SD passed away March 9, 2018, at Wakonda Heritage manor.
The daughter of L. Walter Lang and Alice Richey Lang, Mary was born in Le Mars, Iowa on July 11, 1936. The family lived in Remsen, IA, where Mary attended school until studying two years at LE Mars High School. Following a move to Vermillion she graduated from Vermillion High School in 1954 and the University of South Dakota in 1958. Mary continued her studies for a year at the University of London, England, on a Fulbright Scholarship.
She married Dean Malone in Vermillion on August 9, 1959. They lived in the Denver, Colorado, area where Mary taught for many years, last at Arvada West High School. After her husband’s passing she returned to Vermillion.
Mary was a caring daughter who saw to her mother’s wellbeing. All have said she was good to have as a friend. She loved the outdoors and camped and hiked with her husband. She had a great appreciation for music, especially opera. She loved her pets, cats and dogs who were lucky to share her home. Her interest in ancient history led to trips to Italy, Greece, and Egypt.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Dean and her parents. She is survived by her sister Odessa Lang Ofstad of Kirkville, MO, cousins, and good friends.
