Marion "Ardell" Lovejoy
Marion Ardell Lovejoy was born on January 10, 1934, in rural Wakonda, SD to Marion and Esther (Johnson) Lovejoy. He died on Friday, April 6, 2018 at his home at the age of 84 years, two months and 27 days.
He was raised on the family farm in rural Wakonda. He attended rural Lodi school through the eighth grade, after which he began farming, his life-long career.
Ardell proudly served in the US Army at Fort Lewis, Washington, from April 9, 1957 to April 8, 1959. Upon discharge, he returned to the family farm.
He married Darlene Knutson on August 20, 1961, in Centerville, SD; together they raised their three children, Michael, Joseph and Sherrie.
Ardell engaged in farming his whole life. He also trucked many times to the Seattle WA area as a supplemental income. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years he was often found fishing for catfish in the Vermillion River.
Ardell as a youth enjoyed competitive trap shooting. He was selected to the 1950 and 1951 Sports Afield All-American Trap Team. He also won the 1954 State Doubles Championship among many other individual events. He competed in the National Trap Shooting Championships in Vandalia Ohio four years.
His survivors include his wife of 56 years, Darlene; children, Michael (Connie) Lovejoy of Wakonda, Joseph (Kim) of Newcastle WY, Sherrie (Aaron) Petersen of Beresford; eleven grandchildren, Crista Hauser of Torrington WY, Heather McClintock of Sioux Falls, Jennifer and Jessica McClintock of Sioux Falls, Tangela Love of Rapid City, Collin Lovejoy of Wakonda, Elizabeth Petersen of Beresford, Shawnee Wrage of Rapid City, Kodie Lovejoy of Wakonda, Kaden Petersen of Beresford and Taylor Lovejoy of Newcastle WY. Seven great-grandchildren (Matthew, Hayden, Elizabeth, Carlee, Ryan, Karson and Ember). His parents, Marion and Esther preceded him in death.
