Wayne Leroy Hawley, 82, of Burbank, SD, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, in Vermillion, SD.
Wayne was born in Burbank, SD, on October 3, 1935, to parents Loryn and Irene (Gilbert) Hawley. He married JoAnn Marie Brown on April 30, 1954. He and JoAnn farmed near Burbank for many years until his retirement.
Wayne spent most of his life in Clay County, dedicating his life to his farm and family, Clay County Fair Board, 4-H, Clay County Township Board, and Burbank #10 School Board. Throughout his lifetime, he enjoyed collecting things, including John Deere items, hats, cast iron cookware, liquor cars, and a menagerie of animals. He was active in preserving the Burbank School and enjoyed being a Kent’s Feed dealer. In his retirement years, he was famous for his “zoo” in Burbank. He and JoAnn enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arizona until her passing in 2008.
He is survived by special friend Carol Hawley; children Mark, Larry (Lori), Joyce; siblings Darold (Paulette), Chuck, and Julie (Clark Corwin); grandchildren Allison, Nick, Michaela, Arika, Harrison, Aaron, Rebecca, Cole; numerous great grandchildren, and one great great grandson as well as a big extended family in Burbank and beyond.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, wife JoAnn, brother Glenn, and son Calvin.
Pallbearers are Seth Wright, Harrison Hawley, Nick Hawley, Scott Jensen, Shawn Kruse, and Cole Ruhaak.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday, May 21 at the First Baptist Church in Vermillion with pastor Sandy Aakre officiating, burial will follow in the Bluffview Cemetery in Vermillion. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 PM with a service at 7:00 PM all at the church. Donations can be made to the Burbank School.
