Olive Learing, 96, of Irene, SD passed away Saturday, August 4 at the Edgewood Vista Care Center in Sioux Falls, SD.
Olive Nielson was born November 22, 1921 in Yankton, SD to Olaf and Margaret (Teska) Nielson, she was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural Menno, SD. She attended Anderson and Peterson rural school in the Utica, SD area and graduated from Irene High School in 1939. Olive married Ralph Learing in August of 1942.
Along with her husband, they farmed in the Utica/Yankton area prior to moving to a farm in Irene in 1955, where they farmed until retiring and moving in to Irene in 1977. She became a cook at the Sunset Manor nursing home for several years.
Olive was known for her beautiful flowers and had even been honored for yard of the month. The coffee pot was always on and you knew she had baked something to go with it. She was a member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene where she also enjoyed quilting until her vision declined, yet she was able to knit hundreds of dish cloths.
She is survived by her children Gloria (Larry) Kindopp of Sioux Falls, Merlyn (Susie) of Garvin, MN, Dennis (Judy) of Sioux Falls, Ardis (Dan) Moen of Scottsdale, AZ, Floyd (Shellie) of Remsen, IA, Mary (Perry) Anderson of Colville, WA and Greg (Dawn) of Sioux Falls. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, a sister Joyce Jensen a sister in law Joan Nielson and Olive was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph in 1999, three sons: Vernon, Robert and Donald, three grandsons: Darrin, Danny and Jonathon, a son in law Ronald Goeken and five brothers: Orlyn, Roger, Jim, Leland and Luther Nielson.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 8 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene with burial to follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Irene. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Tuesday, August 7 at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.
