Curtis "Curt" Svarstad
Curt Svarstad was born March 4, 1954 to Donald (Gene) & Betty Svarstad. Shortly after he graduated from Irene High School, he married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Lyngstad on Nov, 3 1972. Having always loved nature and the outdoors, Curt began studying Horticulture at South Dakota State University. He and Mary then welcomed their first child, daughter Tracy Svarstad in April 1973. Then in 1977 they were blessed with a son, Eric Svarstad. Curt graduated from SDSU with his Bachelor’s in 1980. Though Curt experienced great success managing an apple orchard, he was always a strong family man, and decided to return to his father’s farm to work. In addition to running the farm, Curt also successfully operated the Choose & Cut Christmas Tree Farm. After his children were grown, Curt opened his own custom woodworking business, Svarstad Woodworking. Many people of surrounding community will continue to enjoy his beautiful, quality wooden creations for years to come. In addition to spending as much time as possible with his family, he and Mary loved to go bicycling and camping together. Curt was active on the Rural Irene Fire Dept, served on the Viborg Lumber Company Board and the Irene School Board.
Curt was preceded in death by his parents, Donald (Gene) & Betty Svarstad, his brother Donnie Svarstad, granddaughter, Madisen Hope Hackett and nephew, Caine Svarstad.
Curt is survived in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary Ellen Svarstad. His daughter, Tracy (Svarstad) Hackett and her husband Jamie and 3 children, Isaac, Easton & Gracyn. His son, Eric Svarstad and his wife Kristen and 3 children, Abby, Ella & Troy. He is also survived by his brother Gary Svarstad, sister Crystal (Svarstad) Van Wyhe and mother-in law- Colleen Slagle.
