John A. Schaefer, 93, of Yankton formerly of Wakonda, passed away Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Majestic Bluffs Care Center in Yankton.
John Anthony Schaefer, son of Carl and Kathryn McMunigal Schaefer, was born July 26, 1925 in Wakonda, SD. He was baptized, confirmed and married in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. John graduated from Wakonda High School in 1943. After graduation he started farming and raising livestock. On October 15, 1949, he married Donna Mae Nelson. John was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and was active in the Wakonda community for many years. He served on the township board, the Wakonda school board, and the church council. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and belonged to the Yankton Elks and was on the Dakota Telephone board for 28 years.
John and Donna traveled to all the U.S. states and several foreign countries. In their retirement, they enjoyed living in Arizona in the winter months for 16 years. John was an avid golfer and earned 5 holes in one. They moved to Yankton in 2010.
John is survived by his wife, Donna, children; Jackie (Joe) Trudeau, Dr. Tom (Cathy) Schaefer, David (Donna) Schaefer, Jan (Bill) Hansen, and 14 grandchildren; Amy Hayes, Kathy Geary, Erin Hammitt, Dan Trudeau, David Trudeau, Adam Trudeau, Ryan Schaefer, Ali Vos, Heather Schaefer, Kristin Schaefer, Eric Hansen, Katie Dale, Keri Bell and Lee Hansen, also 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Ann Postulka, Vista, CA, one brother-in-law Don Nelson of Manakin Sabot, VA.
John was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Catherine Rose, a brother Robert Schaefer, two sisters Rosemary Ballard and Ruth McGuire, sisters-in-law; Marilyn Schaefer, Shirley Nelson, and Virginia Nelson and brothers-in-law; Howard Ballard, DuWayne Postulka, Luverne Nelson, Darrell Nelson and Bill McGuire, and one nephew Bob Ballard.
