Gilbert M. French, 84, of Vermillion, SD passed away Tuesday, March 6 at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Gil was born January 3, 1928 in Buffalo, NY to Robert and Grace (Morse) French. He attended school in the area, serving in the military in 1946 -1947 before he received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine in 1952 and both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin (1954 and 1956 respectively).
Gil married Janet Reimers on August 29, 1956 in Oshkosh, WI, she passed away in 2001.
He was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley from 1957 until 1967. He came to USD in 1967 as a Full Professor and the Chair of the Psychology Department. He served as Chair for a total of 20 years, from 1967 until 1986 and again from 1990-1991. He retired in 1993. He was a member of numerous organizations including the USD Emeritus Club, the American Psychological Association, Sigma XI, and the American Philatelic Association as he was an avid stamp collector.
He is survived by his three daughters: Katherine (Craig) Rasmussen of Vermillion, Claudia (James Allen) French of Fairbanks, AK and Andrea (Dakota Skye Eagle) French of Iowa City, IA, and six grandchildren: Rachel Phillips, Rebekah LaMie, Renee LaMie, Nicholas Rasmussen, Kai Allen and Maya French.
Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Friday, March 16 at the United Church of Christ in Vermillion.
