Obituary

Edla Inez Jensen Aune was born in rural Irene, SD to Christine (Gorseth) and Harry T. Jensen on June 2, 1915. She joined her only sibling, Beatrice Edel who was two years older. Edla died at the age of 103 years old on December 3, 2018 at her home in rural Volin.
Edla attended Irene High School and Southern State Teacher's College in Springfield, SD and taught at West Prairie School.
Arthur O. Aune and Edla were married on June 2, 1939 in Trondhjem Lutheran Church where they were lifelong members. They lived on the "Esser Place" for 14 years and then moved to the Aune homestead where they raised their seven children.
Edla was a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher and a longtime member of the WMF and ELCW. Edla taught oil painting in the Hurley, Irene, Wakonda elementary schools. She enjoyed crocheting which resulted in over 200 afghans for family and friends. She took pleasure in oil and china painting
Edla is the author of four books: Reflections of Days Past, Journey Down the Road, A Trail of Memories and .... And It was Yesterday. For eight years she also wrote a weekly column for the Tri-County News.
Her children fondly remember the fresh baked bread, caramel rolls and other baked goods fresh out of the oven when they came home from school. Art and Edla frequently traveled both domestically and to Europe. She loved to entertain guests at her home and friends as well as strangers were often found in lively chatter over a cup of coffee and sweets at her kitchen table.
Edla is survived by 2 daughters, Lorraine Gill (Eric Welsch) and RuthAnn Libby and 2 sons, David and W. Kent (Lupe); eight grandchildren, Pam Silverberg (Mike), Anne Barrington (Jeff Laber), Greg Gill, Chelsea Orr St. John, Kelly Ristow (Tim Weldon), Michael Libby (Laura), Anne Cullen (Ross) and Jasmin Perez (Lalo) as well as 20 great grandchildren. Cousins and special friends will also miss their dear friend.
Preceded in death by her parents and sister; Arthur, her husband of 65 years; sons, Olin and Eldean and daughter, June Orr as well as three sons-in-law: James Gill, Bruce Libby and Charles Orr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Trondhjem Cemetery Fund; Hands for Haiti % David Hansen, 45406-295th Street, Irene, SD or Avera Home Hospice at 501 Summit Street, Yankton, SD 57078.

I was very sorry to learn of Edla's death. She was such a sweet person and very kind. I remember visiting their farm when I was young as I often stayed with an aunt and uncle who were neighbors. Several of my relatives are buried in the Trondhjem church cemetery near Volin, and we were always invited to the Aune's after the funerals for something to eat. Evelyn Kamback

I want to extend my condolences to your family for Edla. Edla was a neighbor of my parents, Luvern and Eilene Swensen and she was a 4-H leader to me. I remember going to Art and Edla's house on occasion with my parents. She had a great outlook on life and a positive way about her. I spoke with her on the phone years later. She still had the same great way about her. I want to thank you for her influence on me as a young person and I wish her the best in eternal life. Robin Swensen Nashville, TN

Our condolences to all of the family. It was enjoyable having a cup of coffee with Edla and listening to the history of the area. She was a very intelligent, warm hearted lady and will be missed.
