Lorraine Caroline Martz was born March 29th, 1933, in rural Bon Homme County to
Frank and Christina (Jezek) Kvasnicka. She peacefully passed away at Heritage Manor Avera in Wakonda on April 25th, 2020.

She was baptized at St. George Catholic Church in Scotland, SD. Lorraine graduated from Scotland High School in 1952.

Lorraine married Edward Hessman in Scotland on November 18th, 1952. They were blessed with eight children. She enjoyed working on the farm raising hundreds of chickens, ducks, geese and tending to her garden. She worked at Gurney Seed & Nursery, Sunset Manor in Irene and Heritage Manor. Lorraine was one of the first employees at Wakonda Heritage Manor and served as a cook for many years.

After Edward’s passing in 1979, Lorraine was united in marriage with Frank Martz on January 24th, 1986.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Frank and Lorraine enjoyed gardening and donated much of their produce to the local food bank, Heritage Manor, family and friends. Lorraine and Frank enjoyed going on road trips, especially to the Martz family re-unions every August.

She is survived by children: Brenda VanSchoiack, Madison, NE, Dixie (Mike) Nelson, Lamont (Teresa) Hessman, Doug (Ruth) Hessman all of Wakonda, Julie (Mark) Nelsen
Volin, Michelle (Bob) Foley, Sioux Falls, Michael (Lourdes) Hessman, Yankton, Heidi (Tom) Healy, Irene, Vicki (Howard) Wagennar, Alcester, Cathy (Dave) Smit, Hurley, Jenny (Ron) Peterson, Vermillion, Pam (Darrell) Vik, Beresford, Rick Martz, Wakonda and Royce Martz, Centerville, 38 grandchildren, 46 great- grandchildren and 1 great -great granddaughter.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents Frank & Christina Kvasnicka, husbands Edward Hessman and Frank Martz, brother Frank Kvasnicka and sister Josephine Kvasnicka.

Special thanks and gratitude for the compassionate care given to Lorraine by Wakonda Heritage Manor staff. You truly are angels on earth.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or Wakonda Heritage Manor Avera.

Private Condolence

Dan and Joyce Hessman

To the "8" Hessman children. My condolences are to each of you who have had the blessing of living near to Lorraine most of your lives and sharing in most family events. Retain those special moments. My memories of your mother are during the early years when my brother (your dad) was courting your mother; then marriage; then Brenda; then Dixie; then Lamont; then Doug; then less so with Julie, Michelle, Michael, and Heidi. This is because I lived on and off with your folks during the years 1953 to about 1965. Hopefully one day I can share stories of your folks from all the pictures your mother took during those those years as they lived north of Scotland, near Lane SD, west of Mitchell SD, south of Montrose (two farms), Hiway 19 east of Wakonda, then north and east of Wakonda. Many early year memories for me! Uncle Danny
