On a still pitch dark cold and snowy morning years ago there was a rap on the back door of my family home in Sioux Falls. I was to get on a plane that day to fly back to school. I opened the door to find Marlene bundled up with that familiar big smile, and sparkles in her eyes, with her VW bug running nearby in the drive way. It was well below zero. I said come in! And she said she couldn’t stay but she wanted to say goodbye and give me a little something for my travel. She gave me a big hug and a bag. After she left I looked inside to find homemade cookies and an apple along with a crochet pot holder. That was my family’s dear friend Marlene who was always finding some way to be kind, make you feel special, and make you feel loved.

After I lost my mother a few years back, Marlene started calling me just like my own mother used to call to make sure I was okay. Marlene would pray for me over the phone, and she could pray like nobody else I have ever known, and I’d feel grace wash over me like a warm balm. I’m pretty convinced Marlene had God’s ear whenever she spoke.

I will miss her. I have a voicemail she left, singing Happy Birthday to me last week. She did that every year for the past few birthdays. I will keep that voicemail message and I will cherish it in the coming years. It will bring a smile and remind me of what it feels to receive kindness and feel special and be loved.

We can be comforted by the knowledge she is with her Savior Jesus; and when the crowns are awarded in heaven she will get the one for taking many many many people along with her!

Good bye beloved of God and servant of the King. We’ll see you someday yonder, where we’ll never more wander, and walk on streets paved with purest gold (like Marlene’s heart)!

My love and sympathy to her beautiful family.
2 Timothy 4:7-8.
