Edith Dean Beacom, 102, of Vermillion, SD passed away Saturday, December 5 at the Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD after sustaining an injury at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center where she resided.
Edith was born March 29, 1918 to Jens P. and Matilda (Madsen) Jensen of Irene, SD. The youngest of six daughters, she grew up on their family farm and attended school in Irene. On January 12, 1937 she married William J. “Bill” Dean and moved to Vermillion. There, together with George W. Dean, Hazel (her sister) and Chet Dean, they started a meat processing plant – Dean Pack and the Main Street Market, which they owned and operated for over 40 years.
For a time, Edith was also employed as a cook at a fraternity house. She was an excellent seamstress and was kept busy sewing for their four daughters.
After they closed the business, she and Bill enjoyed attending auctions. When Bill passed, Edith continued to live in Vermillion until she met and married George Beacom of Bronson, IA in 1990, and they spent winters in Texas.
A year after George passed, Edith moved to the Vermillion Assisted Living on Norbeck St. and into the Sanford Vermillion Care Center in 2015 where she participated in Bingo and art activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 50 years, Bill Dean in 1987, her second husband George Beacom in 2006, five sisters and a granddaughter Jill Hoffman.
Grateful for her life and forever remembering her, a beautiful person with a beautiful smile, are her four daughters; Loretta Dean of Lawrenceville, NJ, Marilyn (Jeff) Wirth of Tucson, AZ, Gwen (Jim) Hoffman of Fayetteville, NC and Sherry O’Connor (Tom Gilchrist) of Springfield, SD. Nine grandchildren; Lori Wirth of Tucson, Dan (Beth) Wirth of Knoxville, TN, Tom (Laura) Wirth of Phaeton, IA, Lori (Alex) Smart of Salem, SD, Heidi (Bruce) Hughes of Knightsville, NC, Molly (Amek) Conklin of Carl Junction, MO, Shannon O’Connor (Alan LeNoble) of New York, NY, Angela Callahan of Canton, GA and Michelle (Hank) Wall of Hoschton, GA, and 17 great grandchildren.
The family thanks Dr. Charles Yelverton for the dedicated care he gave to Edith for so many years.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, December 10 with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM all at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. Burial will follow in the Gayville Community Cemetery, Gayville, SD.

To the Family of Edith: I saw Edith's obituary; however, I didn't realize Edith had remarried so I didn't recognize her by her married name of Beacom. Reading her obituary brought back memories of my dad, Melvin "Ole" Gray, working at Dean Pack locker in Vermillion for many years. My dad was a butcher at Dean Pack locker.

The obituary mentions one of their businesses they owned and operated for over 40 years was "Main Street Market". I am curious about Main Street Market. I am curious if Main Street Market was a part of Dean Pack and if they were located in the Dean Pack locker at 309 W Main St - where they sold the meat that was processed. Presently, Steve's Comfort Systems is located in the building where Dean Pack had their meat processing plant?

The heart is never ready, the time is never right to say good-bye. You are in my thoughts now and in the days to come. Angie (Gray) Ladner

My sincere sympathy, to the entire family for loss of a treasure! To Shannon OConnor ( Alan Lenoble) who would tell about Grandma I thank them.
