I just found out the very sad news that one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known passed away yesterday. Helen Brown was my kindergarten teacher. She was one of those teachers that really truly made a difference in her students’ lives. I know that there are a lot of us out there mourning her passing and more will be when they hear this sad news. I’m glad that I was able to see her here and there over the years. When I was pregnant with my daughter, Olivia, she wrote me the nicest letter. One of the things she said was, “How can the little girl with pigtails (meaning me as a 5 year old) now be having her own daughter?” Her card also included a photo of me when I was in kindergarten! She still had my photo and this was 25 years later! I know exactly what she was saying, because I feel the same way about my students when I hear that they are getting married or having babies. Time seems to stand still and they are kind of frozen at the age that I taught them – at least in my mind. This photograph is from a time that I was visiting my parents in the summer when Olivia was 9 years old. I decided to bring Mrs. Brown flowers to thank her for being such a wonderful teacher and person. I wanted to introduce her to Olivia and to tell her how much she meant to me. It is 100% certain that I am teacher and have been one for over 21 years due to amazing teachers like Mrs. Brown. I made a last minute trip back to visit my parents and my Grandma Irene over spring break in March. Just by random chance I got to see Mrs. Brown, because she was in my grandmother’s Alzheimer’s unit in Vermillion. I was so excited to see her again and immediately started babbling about how she taught me in kindergarten. I swear she looked exactly the same, as the woman never seemed to age. Of course she didn’t know who I was, just as my grandmother doesn’t know either, due to Alzheimer’s. Even so, I’ll be forever grateful that by chance I got to see her one last time. I love you, Mrs. Brown! To her family and all those who loved her - you have my deepest sympathy. - Nicole Allen (formerly Richardson)

Dear Brown Family,
My sympathy in the loss of your mom/ mother in law and grandmother. She was a sweet and kind woman and many children in the Clay County area will never forget their Mrs. Brown, for she was, as we all know, very special to each of them. Know that her many years of kindness have not been forgotten and she reaps those rewards in heaven. In my thoughts and prayers.

My condolences to her family at this time. Other than knowing her as one of my son's teachers, what a wonderful teacher she was. I also just knew her from around town over the years. What a sweetheart she was. I will miss running into her around town, as will most of the town. RIP Helen

We moved back to Vermillion when our oldest was 1/2 way through her kindergarten year & thankfully landed in Mrs. Brown's class. She erased all the concerns about how the relocation at that age would affect our daughter. Mrs. Brown was so welcoming, loving & kind to her. It made all the difference...she had no trouble adjusting. So, thank you Mrs. Brown & I would like to add that Tony had Mr. Ron Brown as his high school football coach. We appreciate all the support & teaching over the years you both have given our family. We both went to high school with Barry & Danny. With love, Marlys & Tony Solbach
