Dorothy Reed, 95, of Vermillion, SD passed away Tuesday, March 28 at her home.
Dorothy Reed was born Dorothy Ann Kelly August 3, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa to Peter and Hazel Kelly. Following high school, she attended Drake University in Des Moines where she met Walter Reed. Dorothy worked at the Drake University library where she was in charge of distributing the morning paper. Walter came regularly to the library to read the morning paper. They were married Feb. 1, 1948. She earned her BA in Liberal Arts while Walter attended the school of Law. Walter was soon recalled to active duty and Dorothy became the wife of an active active-duty Air Force officer. They lived in many locations in the United States as well as Germany, Canada and Thailand. Together they raised 4 children, all born at different assignments. Dorothy faced many challenges being a military wife to include packing up the household and family to move sometimes halfway around the world.
At each location Dorothy became involved in a variety of civic work. She began working toward a master’s degree in library science but was unable to finish. Her hobbies included needlepoint, knitting, ceramics and china painting. She was also an active member of PEO. She and Walter enjoyed working for Meals on Wheels as well as the elections. She was preceded in death by Walter, her husband of 74 years, and Anne, their daughter.
She is survived by her children: Elizabeth (Bryce)Hopkins; William (Lynette)Reed; and Joe (Joan)Reed. Survivors also include 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
