James Smith

James M Smith, 86, of Vermillion SD passed away Saturday, August 31, 2024. Jim was born to George and Opal (Taylor) Smith on November 23, 1937, in Centerville SD. They moved to Huron, SD where he attended St Theresa Catholic School and graduated from Huron High School. He worked as a printer for Brown Printing Company and the Plainsman Newspaper in Huron. Jim was a member of the Huron Community Theater and served a term as President as well as acting, building stage scenery, lighting, and sound effects. Jim was with the South Dakota National Guard 153 Engineer Battalion for eight years. He moved to Albuquerque, NM where he married his wife, Sherry (Rembold) Smith. While in Albuquerque he was employed by Modern Printing Co and the Albuquerque Journal.
The opportunity arose to purchase the Ben Franklin Store in Vermillion, SD in 1977 which he and Sherry owned and operated for 20 years. While in Vermillion he also was employed by USD Security Department for four years and then he retired.
Jim is survived by wife Sherry, four children, Deborah (Robert) Wagner (Daughter), Scott Smith (Son), Rick Smith (Son), Nikki (David) Stammer (Daughter), grandchildren Richard, Corey, Taylor Wagner and Sharrie and Kayla Stammer, brothers Patrick, Michael Smith, and sister Darlene (Eugene) Biever and several great-grandchildren. Proceed in death by his parents, and brothers – Max, Bernard, and Jerry.
Visitation will be held at Hansen Funeral Home Vermillion, SD from 5-7pm. Funeral services will be at St Agnes Church, September 11th, 2024, at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St Agnes Church or School.
