Donald Lewis "Don" Jorgensen

July 31, 1930 — February 25, 2020

Donald Lewis Jorgensen, 89, passed away on February 25, 2020 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD.
Don was born July 31, 1930 to Lewis and Esther (Nielsen) Jorgensen at home, rural Hurley, SD.
Don joined the US Marine Corp and served in the Korean War Conflict from January 1952 to December of 1953 as a photographer. Upon returning from Korea, he started working in the telephone business for an independent contractor. This led to employment with Dakota Cooperative Telephone Company. He proudly worked here for 35 years until he retired at the age of 62.
Don married Arlis Leone Madsen on May 18, 1955 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Viborg, SD. They soon moved to Irene, SD and to this union were born three children. Don and Arlis were members of Calvary Lutheran Church during their time in Irene. Don and Arlis moved to Yankton, SD, prior to his retirement and joined Christ the King Lutheran Church. Don loved being in Yankton where he could easily enjoy his favorite pastimes, fishing, trapping and trading stories with the morning coffee group at Paul’s Kwik Stop. Arlis passed away on March 22, 2010. Don moved to Viborg in February of 2015.
Don was a true believer in service to others. During his lifetime, he volunteered his services to church, City Council, the Irene Fire Department, Bluebirds Across Nebraska and as Scoutmaster.
Don’s memory is cherished by his children: Candice (Darrell) Osborn of Centerville, SD; Rex (Janna) Jorgensen of Custer, SD and Todd (Kim) Jorgensen of Yankton, SD. He is also survived by grandchildren: Jennifer (Casey) Slack, Marisa (Steve) Ladd, Benjamin Osborn, Joni (Dustin) Van Essen, Jason Jorgensen (Matt Kroonblawd), MJ Jorgensen, (Amy Gooch), Elizabeth Jorgensen (Ryan Thurm), Ryan Jorgensen; great grandchildren: Landon and Briana Slack, Tyson and Savannah Ladd, Dawson and Dannika VanEssen; and sister, Rita Peterson, sister-in-law Maxine Brockmueller and special friend, Shirley Jensen.
