Barbara Susan Kingsbury, of Vermillion, passed away peacefully in her home on June 10, 2021. A Memorial service will be held at 4:00PM Tuesday, June 15 at Hansen Funeral Home, Vermillion. Visitation will be one hour prior to the the service. The family invites everyone to a luncheon following the service at the Eagles club in Vermillion.
Barb was born in Birmingham, AL to William and Evelyn Lucus on December 18, 1958. While she was young, the family moved to Longview, WA and eventually onto the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, where she grew up. She attended high school at Northwestern Lutheran Academy in Mobridge, SD, graduating in 1977.
Barb married Mark Gerhardt in Seattle on February 3, 1979. They made their home in Lynnwood, WA with their three children, Sarah, Sam, and Jim, before moving to Vermillion in 1990. On June 16, 2000 she was married to Dennis Kingsbury in Mitchell, SD. Over the years they enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, cooking, traveling, family, and grandkids together.
She had a passion for cooking and as she used to say, “I love to feed people!” So naturally, she had a long career in the food service industry, spending nearly 25 years at Sanford Vermillion and then on to the Vermillion School District as the Assistant Food Service Director. In May 2021 she was given the School Lunch Hero award. She and Dennis also catered many events and did cooking demonstrations together. She will be remembered by her bright smile, contagious laugh, positive attitude, abundance of wisdom, and by being the best grandma ever; a role she was very proud of.
Barb is survived by her husband Dennis; daughter Sarah (Jeff Nagl) and her children Will, Lucas, and Kaitlyn of Sioux Falls; son Sam Gerhardt of Sioux Falls; step-daughter Shawna (Thad) Baysinger of Forestburg, SD and children Jolyn, Leah, and Weston; step-son Shane (Kristeen) Kingsbury of Lennox and children Levi and Kianna; sister Linda (Marc) Walsh of Vermillion; sister Gail(Ken) Duhm of Tulalip, WA; brother in-law Kevin (Lynette) Kingsbury of Letcher, SD; brother in-law Randy (Carmen) Kingsbury of Littleton, CO; and many more dear family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gary Lucus, brother Billy Lucus, son Jim Gerhardt, son-in-law Bill Ewing, and niece Tanna Kingsbury.
