Lanny Ray Gustad, 82, passed away on March 24, 2025 on his farm near Volin, SD. Known for his spontaneous conversations, empathy towards others, and making personal connections, he made friends wherever he went. Per his request, a private family service will be held at a later date.
Lanny was born February 19, 1943, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Ernest and Thelma (Hansen) Gustad. He attended country school at Pleasant Valley, and graduated from Volin High School in 1961. He attended South Dakota State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Following college, he began his teaching career at Alcester High School where he taught science and established his passion for football and track as a coach. He went on to teach and coach at Battle Creek, IA, Kingsley, IA, and later at Scotland, SD where he was named head football coach of the year. He fondly shared memories of his coaching days, and enjoyed telling stories of his teams, and the athletes that impacted his life. He returned with his family to the family farm in 1978, where he resided the remainder of his life. A passionate cattle man, he was often seen at livestock auctions, or tending to his cattle herd. Even in his later years, he had a reputation of outworking men half his age.
His continuous thirst for knowledge drove him to wear many hats, and try new things beyond his careers of teaching, coaching, and farming. Able to speak on a variety of subjects effortlessly connected him to others and foster new friendships. He enjoyed travelling the country to visit friends and family, cheering for Jackrabbits football, and was a proud spectator to his grandkids’ sporting events.
Lanny is survived by his daughter Martja (Wade) Huebsch, Morgantown, WV, his son Kris (Rachel) Gustad, Victoria, MN and his grandchildren: Garett Huebsch, Nolan Huebsch, Lauren Huebsch, Loghan Gustad, and Gavin Gustad. Also surviving are his sisters, Wanda (Lonny) Duennerman, Grand Island, NE, and Nona (Mark) Svoboda, Gibbon NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter Jan.
