1945 Margaret "Peggy" 2024

Margaret "Peggy" Louise Nyhaug

April 3, 1945 — December 24, 2024

Margaret “Peggy” Louise Nyhaug, 79 passed away suddenly on December 24th, 2024 at Good Samaritan Sioux Falls Center in Sioux Falls where she had been a resident the past 5 years.

Margaret “Peggy” Louise Duff was born on April 3, 1945 to James and Amelia(Balzer) Duff and joined one sister, Joyce. Peggy attended Mark Twain Elementary, Patrick Henry Middle School and graduated from Washington High School in 1963 in Sioux Falls, SD.

After high school Peggy worked at John Morrell’s in Sioux Falls until marrying Allen I. Hanson in June 1969. To this union 3 children were born, Neal, Larry and Emilie.

In May 1980 Peggy began work as a financial aid counselor at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD. While at USD Peggy made many close friends including coworkers and students. She guided many students through their education here and kept those connections throughout her lifetime. It was here at USD that she “adopted” two very special people a student Brenda and her son Curtis Sehr(Pistulka) and they became lifelong friends and family.

In November 1982 Peggy married Harold A. Nyhaug. They resided in Irene until 1997. While in Irene Peggy enjoyed attending many sporting events, band and choir concerts supporting her kids. This was where her love of Cardinals began. Peggy was a member of the Irene American Legion Auxiliary and The Red Hats Society. Peggy was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene where she was very involved in Sunday school, bible school and the adult choir. Peggy and Harold had a lefse business in Irene which thrived for many years especially around the holidays. Many pieces of lefse made the tables at family and holiday celebrations around the area. They participated in many craft and holiday fairs including the Nordland Fest in Sioux Falls.

In 1997 Peggy and Harold moved to Sioux Falls where they managed the Mallard Cove Apartments for the first 2 years. Over the years in Sioux Falls Peggy had many different employers including the Sioux Falls Arena, Denny Sanford Premiere Center, Southeast Technical Institute, USD-Sioux Falls Center, University of Sioux Falls—which was the roots of her most recent love of Alabama football following head coach Kalen DeBoer. Also Sanford Health and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Peggy’s love of the Cracker Barrel took her and Harold on many trips around the U.S. visiting their stores.

In 2017 Peggy and Harold moved back to Irene. Peggy continued to work from home for Sanford Health until her retirement in 2019.

In 2019 Peggy entered the Good Samaritan Sioux Falls Center. She suffered many setbacks with her health the last 5 years. But as with any setback that Peggy was given in her life she conquered them with courage and positivity. And as always made close friends and personal relationships along the way with the staff and residents there.

Survivors grateful for having shared her life are her children Neal(Jenny) Hanson, Larry Hanson, Emilie(Jeff) Traill. Step children David(Joyce) Nyhaug, Sue(Jesse) Mogen.
