Marjorie Ann “Molly” Walters passed away Thursday, May 9, 2024, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. She was 92. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024 at United Church of Christ in Vermillion, SD beginning at 10:30AM.
Molly was born on August 19, 1931, in Sioux Falls, SD to Harold and Engla (Hanson) Spitznagel. She attended Sioux Falls public schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1949. After a semester at Augustana, she completed her undergrad studies at Pacific Lutheran College in 1953. She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin in the physical therapy program, completing her degree in 1955. After working at the Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic in Seattle, WA, she settled into a PT position at the Crippled Children’s Hospital and School (CCHS) in Sioux Falls, SD.
In 1965 Molly married James Earl “Jim” Walters and moved to Vermillion, SD. Initially Molly worked for Homecare PT, and over the years she worked at Carriage House, Richard’s Jewelry and Gifts, and Ashmore’s Antiques, Jewelry, and Gifts. She was a member of United Church of Christ and P.E.O. Chapter BV.
Molly had a quick wit, showed great love for her community, and cared deeply for all creatures. She was always gracious and caring and will be missed by all her family and friends.
She is survived by her nephew Craig Sandvig (Lois), St. Louis, MO; four nieces: Carol Sandvig-Cornell (Ken), Chandler, AZ, Chris Dummermuth (Dave), Phoenix, AZ, Kari Richardson (Paul), St. Louis, MO, Erika Denton (Bill), Culver City, CA; five great nieces: Elyse, Laura, Emily, Emelia, Madeleine, and many beloved cousins and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Jim, her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Sandvig, her brother Steve Spitznagel, and her brother-in-law Wes Sandvig.
A heartfelt thank you to the caring staff at Prince of Peace, Dougherty Hospice House, and to cousins Jon and Wendy Graff for the time, love, compassion, and laughter shared with Molly over the past several years!
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to South Dakota Public Broadcasting, the National Music Museum (USD), or the United Church of Christ Trust Fund.
