Martha R. Sammons, affectionately known as “Granny” to many who loved her, passed away peacefully under the wonderful care of St. Croix Hospice on Oct 12, 2024. Born on March 13, 1930, she was loved by many for her wonderful sense of humor and witty replies. She enjoyed talking to others about Sioux City history and to recount her many family stories. Martha was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and would often comment that she was 7/8 Norwegian. In 1952, Martha was wed to Martin V. Sammons in Sioux City, Iowa. They made their home together, with their two daughters, in Morningside where she resided in the same house until her death. Martin passed away on Christmas morning, 1978. She never remarried.
Martha enjoyed being a Tax Clerk at the Woodbury County Treasurers Department from 1974-1997. Known as “Sam” in the office, she was forced to retire from her beloved job due to a near fatal car accident in July of 1997. She enjoyed being with her family, reading books, visiting with friends, and watching her favorite TV shows. Because of her love of Sioux City's history, she volunteered at the S.C. Museum Research Center for many years.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Martin L. and Bertha Hanson Wold, her husband, Martin, her beloved brothers and sisters, and her granddaughter, Jaimee Ronfeldt.
Martha and Martin had two girls, Rebecca Sammons Pearson and Jayne (Jim) Sammons Ronfeldt.
Granny was blessed with seven grandchildren of whom she was very proud,
Amy, Amanda, and Adam Pearson and Joshua, Jacob, and Jaimee Ronfeldt and Krissy Lamoreux.
Eight great-grandchildren whom she adored: Tanner Riley, Vance Robinson, Gage, Eli
Ian and Gibson Ronfeldt, Elizabeth Seitzinger, and Ruby Lamoreux, and one great-great-granddaughter, Reya Riley.
