Frank W. Martz, 90, of Wakonda, SD, passed away peacefully at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg, SD, on January 7, 2020, after a short illness.
Frank was born on November 9, 1929, in Iowa to Elsie (Bridgeman) and Oliver Martz. He attended country school through eighth grade before he began working for local farmers. Frank operated heavy equipment helping build bridges until he started his own Martz Excavating in 1966. He placed value in hard work and loved going to Red River of the North fishing with his sons and grandsons. His prize catch was a 300lb 7ft halibut caught in Alaska.
On February 21, 1949, he was united in marriage to Mary Leisinger. To this union was born 6 children. Mary passed away in 1979. Frank married Lorraine Hessman on January 24, 1986.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary, grandsons Bucky and Waylon Madsen, Treyton Martz, and siblings Ada, Jim, Clara, Pete, Ray and Roy.
Frank is survived by his wife, Lorraine, Wakonda, children; Vicki (Howard) Wagenaar, Alcester, Cathy (Dave) Smit, Hurley, Jenny (Ron) Peterson, Vermillion, Pam (Darrell) Vik, Beresford, Rick Martz, Wakonda, Royce Martz, Centerville, Brenda VanSchoiack, Madison, NE, Dixie (Mike) Nelson, Lamont (Teresa) Hessman, Doug (Ruth) Hessman, all of Wakonda, Julie (Mark) Nelsen, Volin, SD, Michelle (Bob) Foley, Sioux Falls, Michael (Lourdes) Hessman, Yankton, and Heidi (Tom) Healy, Irene, also one sister, Pearl Heck, Princeton, MO, 38 grandchildren & 46 great-grandchildren.
