Marvin William “Bill” Huber Jr., 88, of Vermillion, SD passed away on Tuesday, January 21 at the Sanford Vermillion hospital.
Bill was born December 16, 1936 in Menno, SD to Marvin and Esther (Hertz) Huber. He attended school in Menno, and after graduating in 1954, Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served until 1957, spending much of the time stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He returned to South Dakota and enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program at USD in Vermillion. He met Shirley Bietz of Tripp, who was a teacher in Menno, and they were married on June 1, 1958. He graduated with a degree in business administration in 1961.
After finishing his degree, he spent six years with the U.S. Forest Service which took him, Shirley and their growing family to Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon. They returned to Vermillion in 1967, where he began his 32-year career as the Director of Purchasing at USD. He retired in 1999.
Bill had many hobbies and interests, but some of his favorite pastimes were fishing, yard work, reading, and puttering in his workshop building various woodworking projects. Service to others was also important to Bill. He volunteered his time and talents to construction projects on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and at Outlaw Ranch, and he also served in a variety of roles at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Esther, his brother Freddy and sister-in-law Joan, and his brothers-in-law Dennis and Milo.
Bill is survived by his wife Shirley, his three children: Cindy Nelson (Vermillion), Tim Huber (Omaha, NE) and Cathy Huber (St. Paul, MN), and his sisters Marilee Hauck (Menno) and Nancy Doering (Viborg). Bill’s memory also lives on in his 16 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who each enjoyed their own unique and special relationships with him.
Memorial services will be 11:00 AM Monday, January 27 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. Visitation will be Sunday, January 26 from 3:00-5:00 PM at the church.
