Burton Lee Orr, age 71 of rural Volin, SD longtime owner of Orr Feed and Farm Supply in Wakonda, SD, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Friday, June 28, 2019, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg, SD.
He was the son of Burdette F. and Marion (Hemmingson) Orr. He grew up in the Wakonda community on the family farm. Burt attended Wakonda Public School and was a 1965 graduate. After high school he enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at Minot Air Force Base in Minot, ND, until March of 1968, when he was honorable discharged. He returned home to start farming in the Wakonda area. Burt was always close to the land and his livestock.
Burt married Joyce Nelson of Viborg on November 1, 1968. They were blessed with three loving children, Jacquelyn, Valerie and Ross.
In the late 80’s Burt worked at Tractor Supply in Yankton until his father passed in November of 1994. He came back to Wakonda to work with his mother at Orr Feed and Farm Supply and later became manager of the family business, then owner of the store in 2001. He was dedicated to serving his customers, his computer chip was unfailing, always helping to find that right part.
Burt enjoyed a good western, his rhubarb patch turning into rhubarb pie and a good cup of coffee, but most of all pushing his grandchildren on the swing and in the later years as they grew up, teaching them how to drive.
Burt was a member of First Lutheran Church in Wakonda until its closing. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #13 of Wakonda.
This kind and loving husband and father is survived by his wife of 50 years Joyce Orr, rural Volin, three children, Jacquelyn (Jakob) Brouwer of Den Berg, Holland and their four children, Samuel, Michael, Amanda and Joshua; Valerie (Tyler) Berry of Lincoln, NE and their three children, Sarah, Kaylee and Grant; Ross (Susan Williams) of Wakonda and their two children, Parker and Hope; two brothers John and Richard of Wakonda, three sisters, Annetta Talsma of Springfield, SD, Trudy Book of Mitchell and Mary Lou Rassmussen of Sioux Falls, SD; also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and so many wonderful friends.
Burt was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers-in-law, Jack Talsma and Ed Book.
