Joyce Maurine (Nelson) Orr, age 71 of rural Volin, SD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021 in Sioux Falls, SD.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 8th, 2021 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services. The services will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/hansenfuneral
Joyce was the daughter of J. Maurice and Evelyn (Voog) Nelson. She grew up in in the Viborg community on the family farm. Joyce started her education years at country school, then attended Viborg Public Schools, graduating in 1967. She attended South Dakota Beauty Academy in Sioux Falls, SD., where she obtained her Cosmetology degree. She found work at a Yankton, SD hair salon. Later working at the Wakonda Heritage Manor, and Zeta’s Cut Hut in Viborg. Joyce opened All Around Hairstyles by Joyce, in 1983, where she did hair for 35 years, and in the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home. In 2018, she closed the salon to take care Burton. After Burton’s passing in June 2019, she took charge of Orr Feed and Farm Supply.
She married Burton Lee Orr of Wakonda, SD on November 1st, 1968, in Viborg, SD and they started farming together as began their family. They were blessed with three loving children, Jacquelyn (Brouwer) of Den Burg, Netherlands; Valerie (Berry) of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Ross Orr of Wakonda, South Dakota.
Joyce was involved with the Lutheran Ladies Aid, Clay County 4-H & Extension and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Board of Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg, SD.
Joyce loved the outdoors, gardening, animals, baking, quilting, and traveling whenever possible. But most of all she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Burton and Joyce were members of the First Lutheran Church of Wakonda, SD until it’s closing.
Joyce was survived by; Jacquelyn & Jakob Brouwer and their four children: Samuel, Michael, Amanda & Josh; Valerie & Tyler Berry and their three children: Sarah (Joseph) Carlson, Kaylee & Grant; Ross & Susan (Williams) Orr and their two children: Parker & Hope; one sister Marjorie (Gene) Iverson of Vermillion, SD. As well as numerous brothers and sister’s in-law, cousins, nieces & nephews, and many dear friends.
