Volin

Ronald “Ron” Gene Madsen, 78, of Volin, SD passed away unexpectedly on November 25, 2023, in his home. Ron was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.

Ron was born December 16, 1944, in Vermillion, SD to Wilmer and Helen (Yakabowski) Madsen.  He attended Spring Hill grade school and Meckling high school.  Ron served in the national guard from 1964 to 1970, and married Mary Kathleen “Kathy” Hodoway on February 19, 1966, in Hawarden, IA.  They relocated to Gayville, SD where he managed Bartlett Grain before transitioning to Meckling Fertilizer, living in Vermillion before moving to the family acreage north of Meckling. In the 1980’s, he established Madsen Spraying, where he worked until retirement.

Ron’s faith was an essential aspect of his life, and he was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion.

In his leisure time, Ron found joy in the great outdoors.  Whether it was camping, hunting, or fishing.  He embraced every opportunity to appreciate nature’s beauty.  Ron also had a talent for woodworking and enjoyed creating rustic bird feeders and polishing rocks.  He loved taking trips to the casino and playing cards.  He was also a longtime member of the Wakonda American Legion.

Ron is survived by his loving wife Kathy of Volin, his daughter Sheri (Alan) Oullette of Vermillion, son, Robert (Tami) Madsen of Volin, as well as his sister Kathy (Steve) Feeldy of Mitchell, SD and a sister-in-law Patricia Wegner of Gilbert, AZ. He will also be remembered by his five grandchildren: Ashley (Justin) Smith of Akron, IA, Abby (Nathan) Guggisberg of Baltic, SD, Tyler Madsen of Volin, Matthew Ouellette of Sioux Falls, SD and Kaci Madsen of Huntington Beach, CA. Also, three great grandchildren: Camden, Brooks and Dakota Smith.

Ron will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.  His legacy of hard work, dedication, and a love for the outdoors will forever be cherished.

A Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 AM Monday, December 4 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church with burial of ashes to follow in the St. Agnes Calvary Cemetery in Vermillion.  Visitation will be from 6-7 PM Sunday, with a Rosary and Scripture service at 7:00 PM all at the church.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the St. Jude’s Children's Hospital or the Vermillion Food Pantry.
